Guyliner

I am sitting here watching VH1’s I Love The New Millenium. They brought up guyliner. They discussed how it is a fad only for emo bands and those who think the world is falling apart such as the emo people do. Yes you hinted sarcasim there. All you emo people who whine about nothing need to grow up. Anyhow incase you have never heard of the ‘fad’ here is a few definitions for you.
From Urban Dictionary…
1. Eyeliner for guys.
4.Eyeliner applied on a man. Once formerly the territory of only homosexuals, punk rockers and showmen, well-applied guyliner is slowly but surely becoming more socially acceptable for heterosexual men who ascribe to metrosexualism, glamour, and general fabulousness.
Wikipedia has no definition or entry for guyliner sadly.
I have a correction for the dear people at VH1. Guyliner, or rather eyeliner, has been around for many many years. It started in the rock/metal scene (the late 60s & early 70s) as a way for the performers eyes to been seen more clearly as eye contact is important. For people like me to really grasp the meaning of some songs I must look into the performers eyes. The first man I saw wearing eyeliner was Ozzy Osbourne in 1986. Doing more research he was wearing eyeliner before I was born (I was born in 1980). The next guy I saw wearing eyeliner was Alice Cooper. Then there was pretty much every punk band wearing eyeliner as well as Axl Rose, Marilyn Manson, Trent Reznor, Kirk Hammet, David Draiman (Disturbed), & Jonathan Davis. Guyliner was important for a lot of performers before the emo scene came about.
Guyliner is NOT an emo fad. The emo genre has taken it to new heights and sadly (in my view) has made it harder for men to wear eyeliner. They already had issues being labeled homosexual for wearing eyeliner but now they must also have to deal with being labeled an emo and homosexual. Really now come on. How many men do you see wear eyeliner that is homosexual? Not that many if any at all I am sure. No I am not a fan of the emo genre. I hate the fact that the fad of men wearing eyeliner is all ‘new’ when in fact I grew up idolizing men (performers of heavy metal & rock music) wearing eyeliner and make up. Carlos Mencia has made his view on the emo genre public on one of his shows a few weeks ago and I invite you all to watch that skit. It is called I Can’t Go On.
With all this being said…. Jared Leto looks much better without eyeliner while eyeliner makes most men look 100% better. I guess this turned into a rant about the emo genre. Talking about the emo genre cutting yourself IS NOT an emo fad either. But that is for another post when I am willing to let you in on part of one of my most dark secrets.
P.S. Thanks Rachael & Lisa. I will try those suggestions to fix the images on my site.

HAHA, I completely agree… This whole post is full of epic win.
My boyfriend wears eyeliner from time to time.
I say, more power to him. Especially if he looks good in it. Honestly, it amuses me how VH1 even makes it an issue…
These shows really don’t have anything better to discuss, and rave about.
A shining reminder why I don’t watch them.
I think a lot of people confuse what being “emo” really is.
People see a guy in tight pants and right away he is emo, gay, cuts himself, and wants the world to end. When really the “emo genre” has nothing to do with those things.
And it’s a tradgity that today men can’t wear eyeliner or anything else related to the “emo” fashion without being called gay/emo/etc.
So true, men wearing eyeliner is not a new thing at all!
It’s just when the fad with being “emo”/scene/vane/and so on, became “in” it ruined it!
Anyway; I agree Jared Leto looks MUCH better without eyeliner!!
Men do not need to be afraid of eyeliner!
Emo people are… silly. I just want to prod them and tell them to:
1) put on some weight.
2) cheer up.
3) stop thinking the world is against them.
4) SMILE.
LOL @ Rachael’s post.
Yeah, lots of guys wear eyeliner. Especially people in TV/movies. I don’t see how someone can call that a fad. It’s a fact.
I think it’s generally the ignorant younger generation who claim it’s an “emo fad,” simply because they haven’t been around long enough or haven’t done the research to work out that people had been doing it long before.
Personally, my stance on “guyliner” is a fairly negative one. It’s cool for that sort of rock-ish look but I wouldn’t fancy a guy who wore make-up.
